Prepolymertekniikka, often translated as prepolymer technology, is a method used in the synthesis of polymers where low molecular weight polymers, known as prepolymers, are first formed and then further reacted to create high molecular weight polymers. This technique allows for precise control over the polymer structure and properties that might be difficult to achieve through direct polymerization.

The process typically involves two main stages. The first stage is the formation of the prepolymer, which is usually achieved through a controlled polymerization reaction. This prepolymer is characterized by its defined molecular weight and the presence of reactive end groups. These end groups are crucial as they will participate in the subsequent reaction. The second stage involves the chain extension or crosslinking of these prepolymers. This is often accomplished by reacting the prepolymers with a suitable co-reactant or curing agent. This reaction increases the molecular weight and forms the final polymer network.

Prepolymer technology is widely applied in the production of various polymeric materials, including polyurethanes, epoxies, and silicones. For instance, in polyurethane synthesis, prepolymers are formed by reacting diisocyanates with polyols. These prepolymers are then reacted with chain extenders or crosslinkers to produce elastomers, foams, coatings, and adhesives with tailored performance characteristics. The advantages of this method include better processability, reduced viscosity during initial stages, and the ability to incorporate specific functionalities. It also allows for the use of less reactive or more hazardous monomers by incorporating them into the prepolymer first, simplifying handling in the final curing step.
