Prenumber refers to a stage in early childhood development where children begin to grasp concepts related to quantity and number, but before they have fully developed a formal understanding of numerical systems. This period is characterized by the emergence of an awareness of "more" or "less," the ability to recognize small quantities (subitizing), and an intuitive understanding of one-to-one correspondence. Children at the prenumber stage might sort objects by attributes like color or size, and they may be able to match items in a set, but they typically do not yet understand that the order of counting does not affect the total quantity (cardinality principle) or that numbers follow a specific sequence.
