Prekmurians

Prekmurians are an ethnographic group primarily residing in the Prekmurje region of Slovenia, located in the northeastern part of the country. They also have a historical presence and diaspora in neighboring areas of Hungary and Croatia. The Prekmurje region is characterized by its fertile plains, its position between the Mura and Raba rivers, and its distinct cultural identity.

Historically, Prekmurians were subjects of the Kingdom of Hungary for centuries, which significantly influenced their language, customs, and religious practices. This long association with Hungary led to the development of a dialect of Slovenian that shares many features with western Slavic languages and has borrowed vocabulary from Hungarian. The region's Catholic faith is prominent, with a strong sense of community and tradition.

Economically, Prekmurje has traditionally been an agricultural area, known for its grain production, vineyards, and livestock. In more recent times, industrialization and a growing tourism sector have also become important. Prekmurians are known for their rich folk culture, including traditional music, dance, and crafts. Culinary traditions are also a significant part of their identity, with dishes like "prekmurska gibanica," a layered pastry, being a regional specialty. Despite periods of political and social change, Prekmurians have maintained a distinct cultural heritage, celebrated through various festivals and cultural events.
