Predikaatioissa

Predikaatioissa is the plural inessive form of predikaatio, a Finnish term meaning sermon or preaching. The expression refers to the act or occasions of delivering sermons during Christian worship, i.e., “in the sermons.” The basic form predikaatio comes from Latin praedicatio and denotes proclamation, teaching, or preaching of the gospel.

In Finnish church usage predikaatio (and its plural predikaatioissa) can be used alongside saarna when referring to the content or practice of preaching. However, everyday language more commonly uses saarna or saarnat; predikaatio is a more formal, theological term often found in church documents, academic writing, and historical descriptions.

The core function of sermons in predikaatioissa is to interpret biblical texts, present doctrinal or moral guidance, and connect ancient scripture to contemporary life. Sermons may be expository, explaining a specific passage; topical, addressing a theme; or narrative or exhortative in tone. Preachers may draw on liturgical readings, theological tradition, and the congregation’s context to shape the message.

Historically, preaching has been central to Finnish Protestant worship since the Reformation era, particularly within Lutheran traditions. In modern practice, predikaatioissa can vary in length and style, reflecting denominational norms, theological emphasis, and the preacher's approach.
