Predecessor

A predecessor is a person or thing that comes before another in time, order, or position. The term is used across many fields to indicate an antecedent or antecedent model, object, or individual that preceded the current one. In human contexts, predecessors include ancestors or former holders of a title or office.

The word derives from Latin praedecessor, from prae- meaning before and decedere meaning to depart. In genealogy, predecessors are ancestors; in leadership or corporate contexts, predecessors are former executives, founders, or owners.

In mathematics and computing, the predecessor of an element is the element that immediately precedes it in a given ordering. For natural numbers, the predecessor of n is n minus 1. The predecessor function is often denoted pred(n) in formal contexts. In graphs, a predecessor can refer to the immediately preceding vertex in a traversal or to elements related by a predecessor relation in a partial order. In version control and history tracking, a predecessor commit is the commit that came just before another.
