For instance, it occurs during radioactive beta-plus decay, where a proton within an atomic nucleus transforms into a neutron, emitting a positron and an electron neutrino. High-energy cosmic rays interacting with the Earth's atmosphere can also lead to positron production.

In technological applications, positron emission is utilized in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans, a vital medical imaging technique. In PET, a positron-emitting radioisotope is introduced into the body, and the emitted positrons annihilate with electrons in nearby tissues, producing gamma rays that are detected by the scanner. Understanding and harnessing positronkeltéshez is crucial for advancements in nuclear physics, astrophysics, and medical diagnostics.
