Potrebnú

Potrebnú is the feminine singular accusative form of the Slovak adjective potrebný, meaning “necessary” or “needed.” It is used to modify feminine singular nouns in the accusative case, for example in phrases such as potrebnú vec (a necessary thing) or potrebnú časť materiálu (the necessary part of the material).

Etymology and form. The adjective potrebný comes from the noun potreba, meaning need or necessity, with a common Slavic root. Like other Slovak adjectives, necesitar forms decline to agree with the gender, number and case of the noun they modify. For feminine singular, the forms include: nominative potrebná, accusative potrebnú, genitive/dative/locative potrebnej, and often vocative needed as needed. The neuter form is potrebné, and the masculine forms are potrebný (nominative) and jeho other cases.

Usage. The form potrebnú is used when the noun it describes is feminine and in the accusative case, typically as a direct object or as part of predicates that take an object. It conveys the sense that a thing, service, part, or support is required or useful. Examples: Kúpili potrebnú vec. (They bought a necessary item.) Mať potrebnú oporu je dôležité. (Having necessary support is important.)

Notes. Potrebnú should not be confused with potrebná (the feminine nominative) or with forms of the masculine or neuter variants. The choice of form depends on the gender, number and the syntactic role of the noun within the sentence.
