Potentsiaalväljana, known in English as potential field, refers to a scalar field in physics that defines a potential energy for a particle or system at each point in space. This potential energy is associated with a conservative force field. A conservative force is one where the work done in moving an object between two points is independent of the path taken. In such fields, the force can be derived from a potential function by taking its negative gradient. For example, the gravitational force exerted by a massive object is a conservative force, and the gravitational potential energy per unit mass is a scalar field. Similarly, the electrostatic force between charged particles is conservative, and the electric potential is a scalar field representing the potential energy per unit charge.

The concept of potential fields is fundamental in many areas of physics, including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, and gravitation. It simplifies the description of forces by reducing them to a single scalar quantity at each point. Instead of describing a force vector at every location, one only needs to define a scalar potential. This potential function is often easier to work with and analyze mathematically. The gradient of the potential field gives the direction and magnitude of the force acting on a particle within that field. Areas of constant potential are called equipotential lines or surfaces, and they are always perpendicular to the force field lines. This property is very useful in visualizing and understanding the behavior of force fields.
