Potentiaalfunktio, also known as potential function or potential energy function, is a concept in physics and mathematics that describes the potential energy of a system as a function of its position or configuration. It is a scalar function that assigns a real number to each point in space or configuration space, representing the potential energy at that point.

In classical mechanics, the potential function is often denoted by V or U, and it is related to the force acting on a particle through the gradient of the potential function. Specifically, the force F is given by the negative gradient of the potential function, F = -∇V. This relationship is known as the potential energy theorem.

Potential functions are widely used in various fields of physics, including electromagnetism, where the electric potential function describes the potential energy of a charged particle in an electric field, and gravitation, where the gravitational potential function describes the potential energy of a mass in a gravitational field.

In mathematics, potential functions are used to define conservative vector fields, which are vector fields that can be expressed as the gradient of a scalar potential function. Conservative vector fields have the property that the line integral of the vector field along any path is independent of the path taken, and is equal to the difference in potential between the endpoints of the path.
