Potensialreferanse, often translated as potential reference or reference potential, is a fundamental concept in various scientific and engineering fields, particularly in electrochemistry and physics. It refers to a defined point or state against which electrical potential is measured. Without a reference, potential is meaningless as it represents a difference in electrical energy between two points.

In electrochemistry, a standard reference electrode, such as the Standard Hydrogen Electrode (SHE), serves as a universally accepted potential reference. The SHE is assigned a potential of zero volts, and the potentials of other electrodes are measured relative to it under standard conditions. This allows for consistent and comparable measurements of electrode potentials, which are crucial for understanding and predicting the behavior of electrochemical cells. Other common reference electrodes include the Saturated Calomel Electrode (SCE) and the Silver/Silver Chloride electrode (Ag/AgCl).

In electrical engineering and electronics, a ground or common reference point is established. This point is often connected to the earth or a common chassis and serves as the zero-volt reference for circuit analysis. All other voltages within the circuit are measured with respect to this reference. This simplifies circuit design and troubleshooting by providing a consistent baseline for voltage measurements.

The choice of reference potential is critical for accurate measurements and meaningful comparisons. Different applications may necessitate different reference points depending on the specific requirements and the phenomena being investigated. However, the underlying principle remains the same: establishing a fixed point against which other potentials are quantified.
