These are fundamental starting points from which further deductions and theories are built. The word itself originates from the Latin "postulatum," meaning "something demanded" or "required."

In logic and mathematics, postulates are the foundational axioms upon which an entire system is constructed. For example, Euclid's postulates in geometry, such as the statement that a straight line segment can be drawn joining any two points, are postulates that underpin Euclidean geometry. These postulates are not proven within the system; rather, their truth is assumed to allow for the derivation of theorems and other mathematical truths.

In philosophy, postulates often represent self-evident truths or necessary conditions for reasoning or existence. They are statements that are considered so fundamental that attempting to prove them would lead to circularity or infinite regress. The concept of "I think, therefore I am" by René Descartes can be seen as a philosophical postulate, a foundational truth upon which his philosophy is built. The term can also be used in a more general sense to describe any unproven assumption made to advance an argument or theory, especially when direct evidence is unavailable. The validity of the conclusions derived from postulates often depends on the acceptance of the postulates themselves.
