One of the primary posttranskriptional modifications is the addition of 5' and 3' caps and tails to the RNA molecule. In this process, introns (non-coding sequences) are removed, and exons (coding sequences) are joined together to form the mature mRNA. This step is crucial for generating the correct protein sequence from the genetic code.

Additionally, posttranskriptional modifications can include the addition of methyl groups or other chemical modifications to specific nucleotides within the RNA molecule. These modifications can alter the RNA's structure, stability, and function, playing a role in regulating gene expression.
