Postproduktionschef

Postproduktionschef, or head of post-production, is a senior production management role responsible for planning, coordinating, and delivering all post-production work after principal photography. The position is common in feature films, television series, and streaming projects and sits on the production management team alongside the producer and line producer.

The postproduktionschef develops the post-production strategy and schedule, allocates resources, and monitors the budget. They lead the post-production team, including editors, assistant editors, colorists, sound designers and editors, foley artists, ADR, music editors, and visual effects supervisors. They coordinate with post houses and external vendors, negotiate contracts, and supervise workflows from rough cut through final master. They ensure the project meets technical delivery requirements for distribution, including formats, color space, loudness, subtitling and dubbing, and rights clearances.

Quality control is a central duty: reviewing cuts, approving versions, and managing versioning and approvals with the director, producers, and broadcasters. They oversee metadata, archiving, and the secure transfer of material to distributors. Risk management and contingency planning help keep the project on schedule and within budget.

Skills typically sought include strong project management, budgeting, and stakeholder communication, as well as solid knowledge of editing, color correction, audio post, VFX pipelines, and delivery specifications. The role may be called head of post-production or postproduction supervisor in some regions, reflecting organizational differences.
