Postposziczió

Postposziczió is a term used in linguistics to describe a word or phrase that follows a noun or pronoun and modifies its meaning, often in a similar way to a preposition. Unlike prepositions, which precede the element they govern, postpositions come after. This grammatical feature is characteristic of several language families, including Uralic languages like Hungarian, as well as some Turkic, Sino-Tibetan, and Caucasian languages.

For example, in Hungarian, the equivalent of "with me" would be expressed as *veled*, where *vele* is a form of the pronoun "he/she/it" and *-d* is a suffix indicating "with." Another example in Hungarian is *házban*, meaning "in the house," where *ház* is the noun "house" and *-ban* is the postposition indicating location "in."

The function of postpositions can vary. They can indicate spatial relationships (like location, direction, or origin), temporal relationships, possessive relationships, or other grammatical roles that prepositions fulfill in languages like English. The presence of postpositions is a significant typological feature that helps classify languages and understand their syntactic structures. While English relies heavily on prepositions, languages with postpositions often incorporate these markers as suffixes or independent words following the noun or pronoun.
