Postpositsioonilistest

Postpositsioonilistest is an Estonian term used in linguistic descriptions to refer to postpositional elements or postpositional phrases. A postposition is a type of adposition that follows its complement, typically a noun or pronoun, and expresses relations such as location, direction, time, or other relations. Postpositions contrast with prepositions, which precede their complement.

In Estonian grammar, postpositional constructions are discussed alongside the language’s extensive case system. While Estonian relies heavily on noun inflection to encode grammatical relations, postpositions occur in analytic phrases and fixed expressions, and may accompany a noun in certain cases to convey nuances beyond what case endings alone can provide. They are especially common for spatial and topical relations and can interact with possessive and demonstrative elements.

Examples include laua peal (on the table), linna keskuses (in the city center), and loomade kohta (about animals). In typological terms, postpositional languages rely on postpositions to mark grammatical and semantic relations rather than prepositions; some languages use both systems in complementary ways.
