Postmaterialistiske

Postmaterialistiske is a term used to describe a set of values and beliefs that have become increasingly prevalent in affluent, developed societies. It emerged from the work of political scientist Ronald Inglehart, who observed a shift in societal priorities away from basic economic and physical security towards concerns like self-expression, quality of life, and environmental protection.

The core idea of postmaterialism suggests that when individuals' basic needs for survival and security are met, they begin to prioritize higher-order values. These include things like personal freedom, participation in decision-making, intellectual satisfaction, and the aesthetic appreciation of life. In contrast, materialist values focus on economic growth, national security, maintaining order, and respect for authority.

Postmaterialist values are often associated with younger generations and those who have grown up in periods of relative prosperity and stability. They tend to be more educated and have greater access to resources. This value shift is seen as a significant driver of social and political change, influencing public opinion on issues ranging from environmental policy to human rights and cultural diversity.

While postmaterialism describes a trend, it's important to note that it doesn't mean materialist values disappear entirely. Instead, it represents a change in emphasis and the emergence of new priorities alongside the old ones. The balance between materialist and postmaterialist values can vary within societies and evolve over time.
