This effect is achieved by reducing the number of distinct colors in an image to a limited palette, creating flat areas of color and sharp transitions between them. The term is derived from the Italian word "poster," as the resulting images often resemble commercial posters or silkscreen prints.

The posterization process typically involves quantizing the color values of an image. This means that instead of a continuous range of colors, the image is mapped to a predetermined, smaller set of colors. This simplification can lead to a stylized, graphic appearance, where subtle gradients are replaced by solid blocks of color. Artists and designers use posterization to simplify complex images, create a bold and graphic look, or to intentionally abstract the subject matter.

In practical terms, posterization can be achieved using various software applications, often through a dedicated "posterize" filter or adjustment layer. The user can usually specify the number of color levels they wish to retain, allowing for fine control over the intensity of the effect.
