Postbefordran

Postbefordran is the process by which letters, parcels and other mail items are transported from sender to recipient through a postal system. It encompasses collection, sorting, transportation between facilities, and final delivery to the recipient's address or receptacle. International postbefordran includes customs handling and cross-border routing.

Postbefordran relies on a network of facilities and transport links. Items are collected from homes or offices, sorted by destination, moved through regional and national hubs, and delivered by workers on foot or by vehicle. The service can include tracking, special handling for fragile or valuable items, and time-definite delivery options.

A postal operator—whether state-owned or private—typically carries out postbefordran under a regulatory framework that may include a universal service obligation to ensure basic, affordable delivery to all addresses. Oversight by national regulators covers quality standards, pricing, access for competitors, and privacy and security.

Historically, postbefordran developed from organized mail systems in the pre-industrial era to modern automated networks. Advances in sorting technology, digital tracking, and international cooperation have increased efficiency, expanded cross-border mail, and shaped responses to the growth of e-commerce and parcel circulation.
