Porttinumerointi

Porttinumerointi is a system used in Finland to assign unique identification numbers to every property in the country. The system was introduced in 1947 and is managed by the Land Survey Department of the Finnish Ministry of the Environment.

Porttinumerointi assigns a 6-digit number to each property, known as the property identification number or "matikka number". The number is alphanumeric and includes a series of digits and letters that correspond to specific geographical areas and property types. The first two digits identify the geographical area, while the last four digits are unique to each property.

The porttinumerointi system is used for a variety of purposes, including property registration, taxation, and emergency services. It allows authorities to easily identify and locate properties, which is especially important in rural areas where addresses may be incomplete or unclear. The system also helps to prevent property disputes and ensures that properties are correctly taxed.

The porttinumerointi system is compulsory for all properties in Finland, with the exception of properties that are used solely for transient purposes, such as campsites or tourist accommodations. Property owners are required to register their properties and obtain a porttinumero, which is typically done at the time of property purchase or during the process of building a new property.
