Porezna

The word appears in everyday language (for example, porezna obavijest means tax notice) and in the names of government bodies responsible for taxation. The root porez means tax, and the adjective form porezna is used to describe systems, rules, or administrations that deal with taxes.

In Croatia, Porezna uprava refers to the Tax Administration, a state body within the Ministry of Finance tasked with collecting taxes, administering customs, and enforcing tax compliance. Its responsibilities include major taxes such as personal income tax, corporate income tax, value-added tax, and property tax, as well as various duties on goods. The agency handles taxpayer registration, filing, assessments, audits, debt collection, and appeals, and it offers taxpayer services through digital channels.

In other South Slavic contexts, the term operates similarly, designating tax authorities with comparable responsibilities and naming conventions in their respective languages. The use of Porezna and related forms reflects shared linguistic roots and a common tradition of centralized tax administration across the region.
