Polüstüleen

Polüstüleen is a Finnish term that translates to polystyrene in English. Polystyrene is a synthetic aromatic hydrocarbon polymer made from the monomer styrene. It is a versatile plastic that exists in several forms. In its solid state, polystyrene is a rigid, transparent plastic. Polystyrene can be clear and brittle, or it can be foamed.

Common applications for solid polystyrene include disposable cutlery, drinking glasses, and CD cases. Its transparency and moldability make it suitable for these items. In its foamed form, known as expanded polystyrene (EPS), it is a lightweight, rigid cellular plastic material produced by polymerizing styrene. Expanded polystyrene is widely used for packaging, insulation, and disposable cups and food containers. The foamed structure traps air, providing excellent thermal insulation properties.

Polystyrene is produced through polymerization, typically through free-radical polymerization. It is a cost-effective material to manufacture, contributing to its widespread use. However, polystyrene can also be a significant contributor to plastic waste. Recycling efforts for polystyrene exist but can be challenging due to its low density and the volume it occupies. The environmental impact of polystyrene, particularly its persistence in the environment, is a subject of ongoing discussion and research.
