Polüpeptiidiahelas, often referred to as a polypeptide chain, is a fundamental building block in biochemistry. It is a linear sequence of amino acids linked together by peptide bonds. Amino acids are organic molecules that possess both an amino group and a carboxyl group, with a side chain that varies from one amino acid to another. The specific order of these amino acids in the chain dictates the structure and function of the resulting protein.

The formation of a polypeptide chain occurs through a process called translation, where the genetic information encoded in messenger RNA (mRNA) is used as a template. Ribosomes are the cellular machinery responsible for catalyzing the formation of peptide bonds between incoming amino acids. Each amino acid is brought to the ribosome by a transfer RNA (tRNA) molecule, which carries a specific anticodon that pairs with the corresponding codon on the mRNA.

Once synthesized, a polypeptide chain typically folds into a complex three-dimensional structure. This folding is crucial for the protein's biological activity and is influenced by the interactions between the amino acid side chains, including hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonds, ionic bonds, and disulfide bridges. Proteins can consist of a single polypeptide chain or multiple polypeptide chains working together. The sequence of amino acids, and therefore the polypeptide chain itself, is the primary structure of a protein.
