Polümeerimistööalustajat, often translated as polymerization initiators, are chemical substances that trigger or accelerate the process of polymerization, a chemical reaction where small molecules called monomers combine to form a long chain-like molecule called a polymer. Without an initiator, the polymerization reaction might proceed very slowly or not at all, or it might produce polymers with undesirable properties. Initiators work by generating reactive species, such as free radicals, ions, or carbanions, which then attack the monomer molecules, starting the chain growth. The choice of initiator is crucial and depends on the specific monomer being polymerized, the desired polymer characteristics, and the reaction conditions.

There are several main types of polymerization initiators. Free radical initiators are the most common and include compounds like peroxides (e.g., benzoyl peroxide) and azo compounds (e.g., azobisisobutyronitrile, AIBN). These compounds decompose under heat or light to form free radicals. Ionic initiators are used for ionic polymerization and can be cationic (acids like sulfuric acid) or anionic (strong bases like organolithium compounds). Coordination initiators, such as Ziegler-Natta catalysts, are used in coordination polymerization and involve metal complexes that control the stereochemistry of the growing polymer chain. The precise mechanism by which an initiator functions determines the type of polymerization and the structure of the resulting polymer.
