Polymerointialoittajat are chemical species that start polymerization reactions by generating reactive centers, such as radicals, cations, or anions. In most common free-radical polymerizations, initiators decompose under heat or light to form radicals that add to monomer units and propagate chain growth. The choice of initiator influences the rate, temperature range, molecular weight distribution, and polymer architecture.

Initiators are typically grouped by mechanism. Radical initiators include thermal systems that decompose upon heating (for example, azo compounds like AIBN and various peroxides such as benzoyl peroxide) and photoinitiators that generate radicals upon light exposure (for example certain benzoin derivatives and acylphosphine oxide types used in UV curing). Ionic initiators span cationic and anionic polymerizations. Cationic initiators rely on strong Lewis acids or related coordination systems, while anionic polymerizations employ highly reactive organometallic species such as organolithiums or Grignard reagents.

Beyond simple initiators, many systems use combinations to improve control over the polymerization process. This includes approaches described as living or controlled radical polymerization, which aim to balance initiation, growth, and termination steps to achieve well-defined polymers. Applications include coatings, adhesives, resins, and the synthesis of specialty polymers, often under carefully controlled temperature and lighting conditions.

Safety and handling considerations are important because many initiators are reactive, potentially exothermic, and sensitive to shock or friction. Proper storage, temperature control, and compatibility with solvents and monomers are essential to prevent accidents and ensure consistent polymerization outcomes.
