Polymerisatiemethoden refer to the various chemical processes used to synthesize polymers. These methods are broadly categorized into chain-growth polymerization and step-growth polymerization. Chain-growth polymerization typically involves the rapid addition of monomers to an active center, such as a free radical, cation, or anion. This process proceeds by initiation, propagation, and termination steps. Common examples include free radical polymerization, anionic polymerization, and cationic polymerization, each utilizing different types of active species.

Step-growth polymerization, on the other hand, involves the reaction between functional groups of monomers, oligomers, and polymers, leading to the formation of larger molecules. Unlike chain-growth, this process does not necessarily involve an active center, and the molecular weight increases gradually as monomers react to form dimers, trimers, and so on, eventually forming long polymer chains. Condensation polymerization is a prominent example of step-growth polymerization, where a small molecule, like water, is eliminated during the reaction.

The choice of polymerization method depends on the desired polymer structure, properties, molecular weight, and the specific monomers being used. Factors such as temperature, pressure, solvents, and the presence of catalysts or initiators play crucial roles in controlling the polymerization process and the characteristics of the resulting polymer.
