Polymerisaatioihin is a Finnish term referring to polymerization reactions. Polymerization is a fundamental chemical process where small molecules, known as monomers, chemically bond together to form a long chain-like molecule called a polymer. These polymers can be natural, like proteins and DNA, or synthetic, like plastics and synthetic fibers. The process involves the repetitive linking of monomer units, leading to a macromolecule with unique physical and chemical properties depending on the type of monomer and the reaction conditions.

There are several types of polymerization reactions, broadly categorized into addition polymerization and condensation polymerization. In addition polymerization, monomers add to one another in such a way that the polymer contains all the atoms of the monomer. This often involves the formation of a reactive intermediate, such as a free radical, cation, or anion, which propagates the chain reaction. Examples include the polymerization of ethylene to polyethylene and styrene to polystyrene. Condensation polymerization, on the other hand, involves the reaction between monomers with the elimination of a small molecule, such as water, methanol, or hydrogen chloride. In this process, the resulting polymer does not contain all the atoms of the original monomers. Examples include the formation of polyesters from diols and diacids, and polyamides from diamines and diacids. The efficiency and outcome of polymerization reactions are influenced by factors such as temperature, pressure, the presence of catalysts, and the concentration of monomers. Understanding these polymerization reactions is crucial for the synthesis and application of a vast array of materials used in modern society.
