Polylactate

Polylactate, often abbreviated as PLA, is a biodegradable and biocompatible polyester derived from renewable resources such as corn starch, sugarcane, or potato starch. It is synthesized through the polymerization of lactic acid. PLA exhibits properties that make it suitable for a wide range of applications, including packaging, textiles, 3D printing filaments, and medical implants. Its biodegradability means it can decompose into lactic acid and eventually carbon dioxide and water under appropriate composting conditions. The physical properties of polylactate can be modified through variations in its molecular weight and stereochemistry, influencing its strength, flexibility, and melting point. PLA is often seen as a sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics due to its renewable origin and end-of-life biodegradability.
