Polyfaseelektriciteit refers to an electrical system that uses multiple alternating current (AC) phases to transmit power. Unlike single-phase systems, which use a single alternating current, polyphase systems use two or more currents that are offset in time. The most common polyphase systems are three-phase systems, which are widely used in industrial and commercial applications due to their efficiency and reliability.

In a three-phase system, three currents are generated by three separate windings on a single rotor or stator, each offset by 120 degrees from the others. This configuration allows for a more constant power delivery and reduced current fluctuations, making it ideal for high-power applications. The three-phase system can be further categorized into two types: star (or wye) and delta configurations.

In a star configuration, the three phases are connected to a common neutral point, while in a delta configuration, the phases are connected in a closed loop without a neutral point. The choice between these configurations depends on the specific requirements of the application, such as voltage levels and fault current considerations.
