Therefore, a polydentate ligand is one that possesses more than one donor atom available for coordination.

Common examples of polydentate ligands include ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), which is hexadentate, meaning it has six donor atoms. Other well-known polydentate ligands include ethylenediamine (en), which is bidentate (two donor atoms), and diethylenetriamine (dien), which is tridentate (three donor atoms). The ability of polydentate ligands to bind to a metal ion at multiple points leads to the formation of chelate complexes. Chelation is a process that significantly enhances the stability of coordination compounds.

The increased stability observed in complexes formed by polydentate ligands compared to those formed by monodentate ligands of similar donor atoms is known as the chelate effect. This effect is entropically driven, as the formation of a chelate complex results in the release of more solvent molecules than the formation of a complex with analogous monodentate ligands.
