Polychromasia
Polychromasia is a hematology term describing red blood cells that display a bluish or varied cytoplasmic color on a Wright-stained peripheral blood smear. This polychromatic appearance results from residual ribosomal RNA in immature erythrocytes, known as reticulocytes. Reticulocytes are typically identified more clearly with supravital stains, but the presence of increased bluish cells on routine stains correlates with reticulocytosis.
