In solution, it can range from a viscous liquid to a semi-solid gel, depending on the concentration and molecular weight of the polymer. The degree of hydrolysis, which refers to the conversion of amide groups to carboxylate groups, also significantly influences its properties, particularly its charge density and behavior in different pH conditions and in the presence of divalent cations.

Polyakrylamidový materials are widely used in various industries. In water treatment, they act as flocculants, aggregating suspended particles to facilitate their removal. In the oil and gas industry, they are employed for enhanced oil recovery. They also find use in paper manufacturing as retention aids and in agriculture as soil conditioners to improve water retention and reduce erosion. Furthermore, polyacrylamide gels are fundamental in laboratory techniques such as gel electrophoresis for separating biomolecules like DNA and proteins. However, concerns exist regarding the potential presence of residual acrylamide monomer, which is a neurotoxin and suspected carcinogen, in some polyacrylamide products, leading to regulations and efforts to minimize monomer content.
