Polttoainepumppu, often referred to as a fuel pump, is a critical component in internal combustion engine vehicles. Its primary function is to deliver fuel from the fuel tank to the engine's fuel injection system or carburetor. The pump ensures that the engine receives a consistent and pressurized supply of fuel, which is essential for efficient combustion and operation.

There are several types of fuel pumps used in automotive applications. Mechanical fuel pumps were common in older vehicles, driven by the engine's camshaft. Modern vehicles predominantly use electric fuel pumps, which are typically located inside the fuel tank or mounted externally near the tank. Electric pumps offer advantages in terms of reliability, fuel pressure control, and packaging.

The operation of a typical electric fuel pump involves an electric motor that drives an impeller or diaphragm. As the motor spins, it draws fuel from the tank and forces it through a filter and then to the engine. The fuel pressure is regulated by a separate pressure regulator, which returns excess fuel to the tank to maintain the correct operating pressure.

A failing fuel pump can manifest in several ways. Symptoms may include engine sputtering or hesitation, difficulty starting the engine, a sudden loss of power, or a complete inability for the engine to run. In some cases, a loud whining noise from the fuel tank area can also indicate a fuel pump issue. If a fuel pump fails entirely, the engine will not receive any fuel and will not start. Regular maintenance and timely replacement of worn fuel filters can help extend the lifespan of a fuel pump.
