Polttoaineenruiskutus, often translated as fuel injection, is a fuel delivery system used in internal combustion engines. It replaces the traditional carburetor by directly injecting fuel into the engine's intake manifold or combustion chamber. This precise control over fuel delivery allows for more efficient combustion, leading to improved fuel economy and reduced emissions compared to carbureted engines.

The system typically consists of fuel injectors, a fuel pump, fuel lines, and an electronic control unit (ECU). The ECU receives data from various sensors, such as the engine's speed, temperature, and throttle position, to determine the optimal amount of fuel to inject. This information is then used to activate the fuel injectors at the precise moment and for the duration required to deliver the correct fuel-air mixture.

There are several types of fuel injection systems, including single-point injection (SPI), multi-point injection (MPI), and direct injection (DI). SPI systems inject fuel into the intake manifold at a single point, similar to a carburetor. MPI systems use individual injectors for each cylinder, providing more accurate fuel delivery. Direct injection systems inject fuel directly into the combustion chamber, offering the highest level of efficiency and performance. Fuel injection technology has become standard in most modern gasoline and diesel engines due to its significant advantages in terms of performance, fuel efficiency, and environmental impact.
