Pollenosis

Pollenosis, also commonly known as hay fever or allergic rhinitis, is a prevalent allergic condition triggered by pollen from various plants. Pollen is a fine powdery substance produced by flowers and trees for fertilization. In individuals with pollenosis, the immune system mistakenly identifies pollen as a harmful invader, leading to an exaggerated response.

The symptoms of pollenosis typically manifest during specific seasons, depending on the types of plants releasing pollen in a particular region. These symptoms can include sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itchy eyes, watering eyes, and a scratchy throat. Some individuals may also experience post-nasal drip and fatigue. Diagnosis of pollenosis usually involves a medical history, physical examination, and allergy testing. Allergy tests, such as skin prick tests or blood tests, can help identify specific pollen allergens responsible for the symptoms. This may involve antihistamines, nasal corticosteroids, decongestants, and allergen immunotherapy, also known as allergy shots. Avoiding pollen exposure, such as staying indoors during peak pollen times and keeping windows closed, can also be beneficial.
