Politiikkalähtöisyys, often translated as "policy-driven" or "politically motivated," refers to a phenomenon where decisions, actions, or policies are primarily shaped by political considerations rather than solely by objective analysis, efficiency, or the public good. This approach prioritizes achieving political objectives, such as gaining public support, securing electoral advantage, or maintaining power, often influencing the design and implementation of policies.

The concept can manifest in various ways. For instance, a government might introduce a policy that is popular with voters but lacks long-term economic viability. Similarly, resource allocation within public services can be influenced by political priorities, leading to funding decisions that may not align with the greatest need or the most effective use of funds. In international relations, politiikkalähtöisyys can describe foreign policy decisions that are made to enhance a nation's prestige or to satisfy domestic political pressures, even if they carry significant risks or costs.

Critics of politiikkalähtöisyys argue that it can lead to suboptimal outcomes, inefficient use of resources, and a disconnect between policy and evidence-based practice. It can also foster a short-term perspective, neglecting future consequences in favor of immediate political gains.
