Poliitikapõhimõtted are foundational ideas and values that guide the formation and operation of political systems. The term, from the Estonian languages, literally translates to “political principles” and is commonly used to describe core ideals such as democracy, rule of law, human rights, and equality before the law. In many contexts, these principles are seen as ethical benchmarks that political actors are expected to uphold.

In the Estonian constitution, the poliitikapõhimõtted are enshrined in Article 1, which establishes the state as a democratic republic operating according to the principles of self‑determination, the rule of law, and the separation of powers. The concept is also emphasized in party platforms and public policy documents, where it serves as a reference point for evaluating legislation and governance practices.
