Polarizacija

Polarizacija is a phenomenon that affects transverse waves, such as light and radio waves. It describes the orientation of the oscillations of the wave. Unpolarized light, for example, oscillates in all directions perpendicular to its direction of travel. Polarization restricts these oscillations to a single plane.

There are several ways to polarize a wave. One common method is through a polarizer, a material that allows oscillations in one direction to pass through while blocking oscillations in other directions. This results in polarized light. Reflection can also cause polarization. Light reflected from a non-metallic surface, like water or glass, becomes partially or fully polarized parallel to the surface.

Another method is scattering. When light interacts with particles, it can be scattered in a way that causes polarization. For instance, sunlight scattered by the Earth's atmosphere is polarized, which is why polarizing sunglasses can reduce glare from the sky. Birefringence, a property of certain crystalline materials, also leads to polarization by splitting an unpolarized light beam into two beams with different polarization states.

The concept of polarization is crucial in various fields, including optics, telecommunications, and material science. It is utilized in technologies like LCD screens, 3D glasses, and radar systems. Understanding polarization helps explain phenomena such as the shimmering of certain gemstones and the functioning of polarizing filters in cameras.
