Polar orbiting refers to satellites that travel in orbits with a near-polar inclination, typically around 90 degrees. In these orbits, the satellite moves from north to south or south to north, passing close to both poles. As the Earth rotates beneath the orbit, the satellite’s ground track shifts westward, enabling broad global coverage over time. Polar orbiting is especially effective for monitoring large areas and tracking changes over remote regions.

Most polar orbits are in low Earth orbit, at altitudes roughly between 600 and 1,000 kilometers. Typical orbital periods are about 90 to 100 minutes. A common subset is the sun-synchronous polar orbit, with an inclination near 98 degrees, chosen so the satellite crosses the same local solar time on each pass. This repeatable lighting condition is advantageous for consistent imaging and data collection.

Applications of polar orbiting include weather monitoring, Earth observation, environmental surveillance, and reconnaissance. Polar orbits allow high-latitude coverage and frequent revisits, supporting meteorology, climate research, and mapping. Satellites in these orbits often carry imaging, infrared, radar, or atmospheric sensors and may be part of national or civilian remote sensing programs, such as weather and environmental satellites.

Operational considerations include ground track repeats, wrap-around coverage of multiple longitudes, and repeat-cycle planning to ensure timely data delivery. Polar orbiting systems must account for atmospheric drag, radiation exposure, and orbital maintenance to sustain altitude and pointing accuracy. The approach has been foundational to modern global observation networks since the early era of spaceflight.
