Polümeeriseerimine is the chemical process by which small molecules, called monomers, are joined together to form long chains or networks of molecules, known as polymers. This reaction is fundamental to the creation of plastics, rubbers, and many other synthetic and natural materials.

There are several types of polymerization reactions. Chain-growth polymerization, also known as addition polymerization, involves the sequential addition of monomers to an active center, typically an ion or a radical. This process can be initiated by heat, light, or chemical initiators. Examples include the formation of polyethylene from ethylene monomers and polypropylene from propylene monomers.

Step-growth polymerization, or condensation polymerization, involves the reaction between monomers that have two or more functional groups. In each step, a small molecule, such as water or methanol, is eliminated, and the monomers link together. Polyesters and polyamides, like nylon, are formed through this mechanism.

Bulk polymerization, solution polymerization, suspension polymerization, and emulsion polymerization are common methods used to carry out these reactions, each offering different advantages in terms of heat control, product purity, and polymer properties. The choice of polymerization method and the specific monomers used dictate the final characteristics of the polymer, such as its flexibility, strength, and thermal resistance.
