Polümeerahel

Polümeerahel refers to a chain of repeating structural units called monomers. These units are chemically bonded together to form a long molecule, which is characteristic of polymers. The properties of a polymer are largely determined by the type of monomer, the length of the polymer chain, and how these chains are arranged and interact with each other.

Polymers are ubiquitous in nature and in synthetic materials. Natural polymers include essential biological molecules like DNA, proteins, and carbohydrates. Synthetic polymers, such as polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polystyrene, are the basis of many everyday products, from plastics and fabrics to adhesives and coatings.

The formation of a polymer chain, known as polymerization, can occur through various mechanisms, including addition polymerization and condensation polymerization. In addition polymerization, monomers add to one another without the loss of any atoms. Condensation polymerization, on the other hand, involves the reaction between monomers with the elimination of a small molecule, such as water. The study of polymer chains is fundamental to polymer science and engineering, enabling the design and development of materials with tailored properties for diverse applications.
