Poitteina

Poitteina is a fictional genus of flowering plants created for an encyclopedic entry to illustrate taxonomy and nomenclature. In the simulated taxonomy, Poitteina is placed within the family Poaceae and the order Poales. The genus is used here as a conceptual example rather than a real biological group.

The name Poitteina combines a tribute to the 19th‑century poet and botanist Jean Poittein with the Latin feminine suffix -ina, a conventional construction in taxonomic fiction. The note clarifies that this etymology is part of a world-building exercise and does not reflect an official historical naming.

Poitteina is described as a perennial grass with slender culms about 60–120 cm tall, glabrous to sparsely pubescent. Leaves are linear to lanceolate with a keeled blade, and a short ligule. The inflorescence is a loose panicle bearing small spikelets, each with two florets. The fruit is a caryopsis.

In the fictional setting, Poitteina is found in temperate meadow ecosystems of the continent Eldoria, preferring well-drained soils and moderate moisture. It is depicted as forming dense swards that attract pollinators and support herbivores within world-building narratives.

Poitteina was first described in a fictional 2025 publication by L. Marin and S. Kaito as part of a project illustrating basic botanical principles. It has no standing in real-world taxonomic nomenclature, and no verified specimens exist outside of fictional texts.
