Podriadenosti

Podriadenosti is a term used in linguistics to describe the relationship between clauses where one clause, the subordinate clause, is grammatically dependent on another clause, the main clause. The subordinate clause cannot stand alone as a complete sentence and functions as a part of the main clause, similar to how a noun, adjective, or adverb functions within a simple sentence.

There are several types of subordinate clauses, often identified by their function. Noun clauses act as nouns, performing roles like subject, object, or complement. Adjective clauses, also known as relative clauses, modify nouns or pronouns, providing additional descriptive information. Adverbial clauses function as adverbs, modifying verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, and often indicating time, place, cause, condition, or concession.

The subordinate clause is typically introduced by a subordinating conjunction (e.g., because, although, since, if, when) or a relative pronoun (e.g., who, whom, whose, which, that). The relationship of podriadenosti is a fundamental concept in understanding complex sentence structures and the way meaning is conveyed through the interplay of different grammatical units. It distinguishes complex sentences from compound sentences, where clauses are of equal grammatical rank and joined by coordinating conjunctions.
