A podiumrecensie typically discusses elements such as acting or performance, direction, dramaturgy, design (set, lighting, costumes), music or sound, pacing, and atmosphere, as well as the interplay with the audience. The review often comments on concept and interpretation, the ensemble, and the work’s originality or risks. The format in newspapers or magazines usually includes an introduction with the production name and credits, a descriptive middle, an analytical section, and a final verdict or assessment. The writer’s observations and taste are important, but specific moments or decisions from the performance are cited to support judgments.

Differences from other reviews lie mainly in the focus on a live experience and the ephemeral nature of stage performances, rather than on recordings or other media.
