Plástiðnaður

Plástiðnaður refers to the plastics industry, encompassing the manufacturing and processing of plastic products. This global sector transforms raw materials, primarily derived from petroleum and natural gas, into a vast array of everyday items. The production process involves polymerization, where small molecules (monomers) are chemically linked to form long chains (polymers). These polymers are then typically compounded with additives to enhance properties like durability, flexibility, color, and resistance to heat or UV radiation.

The industry is characterized by various manufacturing techniques, including injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, and thermoforming. Injection molding is used for complex shapes, extrusion for continuous profiles like pipes and films, blow molding for hollow containers, and thermoforming for packaging and trays. The resulting plastic products serve numerous sectors, including packaging, automotive, construction, electronics, textiles, and healthcare.
