The Plug and Charge (PnC) process is a method for simplifying and securing the charging of electric vehicles. It automates the authentication and authorization process between the electric vehicle (EV) and the charging station. Traditionally, EV drivers need to use an app, RFID card, or credit card to initiate and pay for charging sessions. Plug and Charge aims to eliminate these steps by enabling the vehicle itself to communicate its identity and payment information to the charging infrastructure.

When an EV equipped with PnC technology is plugged into a compatible charging station, the vehicle and the charging station establish a secure connection. This connection allows for the exchange of digital certificates, which verify the vehicle's identity and link it to the owner's charging account. Once authentication is successful, the charging session begins automatically, and payment is processed in the background without any user intervention.

The key benefits of Plug and Charge include enhanced user convenience, as drivers no longer need to manage multiple charging cards or apps. It also improves security by using standardized, encrypted communication protocols to prevent unauthorized access and fraud. The implementation of Plug and Charge relies on established standards like ISO 15118, which defines the communication interface between the EV and the charging station. For Plug and Charge to function, both the vehicle and the charging station must support the standard, and the vehicle must be registered with a charging service provider that participates in the PnC ecosystem.
