Pleuravæsker

Pleuravæsker, also known as pleural fluid, is a clear, watery liquid that normally surrounds the lungs and the lining of the chest cavity, the pleura. Its primary function is to reduce friction between the lungs and the chest wall during breathing. Pleuravæsker is typically colorless and has a slight salty taste, similar to the taste of tears. It is produced by the pleura and is composed mainly of water, electrolytes, and proteins.

Excessive accumulation of pleural fluid, known as pleural effusion, can occur due to various conditions. These include infections, heart failure, cancer, and pulmonary embolism. The presence of pleural effusion can be detected through physical examination, chest X-ray, or ultrasound. The fluid can be analyzed to determine its cause and to guide appropriate treatment.

Pleuravæsker is usually harmless and does not require treatment. However, if the fluid is excessive or caused by an underlying condition, medical intervention may be necessary. This can include draining the fluid through a procedure called thoracentesis or treating the underlying cause of the effusion. It is important to consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and management of pleural effusion.
