Planeness

A perfectly planar surface has no deviations in any direction, meaning all points on the surface lie in the same infinite, flat expanse. In practical applications, true planeness is an ideal that is rarely achieved. Instead, measurements of planeness quantify the extent of deviation from this ideal.

Deviations from planeness can take various forms, including undulations, waves, warpage, and unevenness. The acceptable level of planeness is highly dependent on the intended use of the surface. For example, optical components like mirrors and lenses require extremely high degrees of planeness to ensure accurate reflection and refraction of light. In contrast, a surface for general construction might have a much looser tolerance for planeness.

Methods for measuring planeness vary. Optical interferometry is a highly precise technique used for measuring very flat surfaces. Mechanical methods, such as using a straight edge or dial indicator, are employed for less stringent requirements. In manufacturing and metrology, specifications for planeness are crucial for ensuring the proper function and interchangeability of parts.
