Pixelöityminen

Pixelöityminen is a Finnish term that translates to "pixelation" in English. It refers to the visual effect where individual pixels become visible, typically due to a low resolution or excessive scaling of an image or video. When an image is pixelated, the smooth gradients and fine details are replaced by blocky, square-shaped elements, making the image appear coarse or jagged. This phenomenon can occur when a digital image is enlarged beyond its native resolution or when a digital signal is compressed too heavily, leading to data loss and a reduction in detail.

The appearance of pixelöityminen is directly related to the pixel density of a display or the resolution of an image file. Higher resolutions and pixel densities result in smaller, less noticeable pixels, thus reducing the likelihood of observable pixelation. Conversely, lower resolutions mean larger pixels, which are more easily discernible, especially when viewed on larger screens or when the image is zoomed in. In video, pixelöityminen can manifest as blocky artifacts, particularly in areas of rapid motion or low contrast. While often considered an undesirable artifact, pixelation can sometimes be intentionally employed as an artistic effect in digital art or graphics.
