Pistemenetelmä

Pistemenetelmä, often translated as point method or scoring method, is a qualitative assessment technique used for evaluating and comparing different options or projects. It involves assigning numerical scores to predefined criteria based on their importance or relevance. Each option is then assessed against these criteria, and a weighted score is calculated for each option by multiplying the score for each criterion by its assigned weight and summing these products. This process results in a quantitative comparison, allowing for a more objective decision-making process than purely subjective evaluation.

The development of a pistemenetelmä typically begins with identifying the key decision criteria that are relevant to the problem at hand. These criteria can range from cost and feasibility to impact and risk. Once the criteria are established, weights are assigned to reflect their relative importance. For instance, if cost is considered twice as important as feasibility, its weight would be double. Subsequently, each option is evaluated against each criterion, and a score is assigned, often on a predefined scale (e.g., 1 to 5). Finally, the weighted scores are calculated and summed for each option to arrive at a total score. The option with the highest total score is generally considered the most favorable.
