Pisanki

Pisanki are ornately decorated Ukrainian Easter eggs. The tradition of decorating eggs for Easter, or "pysanky" in Ukrainian, is ancient and predates Christianity in Ukraine. Originally, these eggs were symbols of life, fertility, and the sun. With the arrival of Christianity, the symbolism evolved, and the decorated eggs became associated with the Easter holiday and the resurrection of Christ.

The process of creating a pysanka is intricate and involves a batik method using beeswax and dyes. Intricate designs are drawn onto the raw eggshell with a stylus, which is then dipped into progressively darker dyes. The beeswax temporarily protects the areas it covers, preserving the original color of the egg. Once the dyeing is complete, the wax is melted off, revealing the vibrant, multi-colored patterns. Traditional motifs often include geometric shapes, floral designs, and symbols representing nature, faith, and good fortune. Each symbol and color carries specific meanings. The most common eggs used are from chickens, but geese and duck eggs are also utilized for their larger surface area. Pysanky are not meant to be eaten but are kept as cherished decorations, heirlooms, and gifts. The tradition is passed down through generations, with families often having their own unique patterns and techniques.
